The idea of involving professional student youth, namely, law students, into activities on protecting public interests in Belarus was born in February of 2005 and with the flow of time has developed into a Summer Camp on Human Rights for Law Students.

Implementation of the first pilot project "National Summer Camp on Human Rights for Law Students 2005" allowed us to fix the fact that young people, future lawyers express interest towards the questions of realization of human rights worldwide and in Belarus.

When organizing the Summer Camp on Human Rights for Law Students, Foundation for Legal Technologies Development, together with international partner organizations aims at the following:

  • To provide participants with knowledge about national and international Human Rights protection institutions, about human rights technologies;
  • To distribute information about national Human Rights-oriented and other NGOs; about their activities, about needs in legal services;
  • To get participants involved in conducting monitoring human rights activities in the regions of their residence;
  • To contribute to formation of youth human rights initiatives;
  • To involve active and interested law students into participation in educational and other national and international human rights-oriented programs.

Within the 10 days of the program, students of law faculties of Belarusian universities get to know theory and practice of protection of human rights and freedoms, get familiar with international mechanisms of human rights and freedoms protection: UN system, European system of human rights protection, OSCE Human Dimension liabilities.

The study program presupposes deep insight into standards of fundamental rights: right to fair trial, right to freedom and personal immunity, freedom from torture, right to freedom of assembly and associations, freedom of speech.

The process of education in the Summer Camp is based on active involvement of participants into the study process as such. Several methods are used for that:

  • Role plays;
  • Tests;
  • Discussions;
  • Mock trials;
  • Interactive lectures;
  • Team work, etc.

International and Belarusian experts, lawyers, professors of law and political science are invited to hold study and practical sessions.
All of them are experienced in the sphere of human rights protection, possess techniques of monitoring human rights, have experience in teaching standards of human rights protection.

Summer Camp on Human Rights for Law Students 2006 and Summer Camp on Human Rights for Law Students 2007 were conducted in Germany (Bad Liebenzell), in the Internationales Forum Burg Liebenzell e.V. Akademie fur politische Bildung und internationale Jugendbegegnung. Territorial proximity to Strasbourg allowed to organize study visits for Belarusian students into the European Court of Human Rights and the Council of Europe.

Taking part in organizing Summer camps on Human Rights, thematic international meetings, law essay competition and other events directed towards development of ideas of legal protection of public interests, Foundation for Legal Technologies Development grounds its activities on the "Basic principles on the Role of Lawyers" in accordance to which lawyers, while defending rights of their clients, should defend the interests of  justice, should assist to protection of human rights and basic freedoms that are recognized by national and international law, and in all cases act independently and in good faith, in accordance with law, recognized norms and legal ethics.
